College and High School football teams across the state don blue ribbons on helmets to raise awareness

The Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation has launched the inaugural, statewide Blue Ribbon Campaign this September for what Governor Mike Beebe has proclaimed “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.” College and High School teams across the state will participate in an unprecedented show of unity by wearing a blue ribbon decal on their helmets for September games. Prostate cancer develops in one out of every six men—this rate jumps to a staggering one in three men in the African-American community and for those men who have a family history of the disease. Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer killer behind lung cancer, and is the second most diagnosed cancer in men behind skin cancer. In Arkansas, a higher rate of men die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer, according to the Arkansas Central Cancer Registry.

“We believe this is the beginning of something very powerful and transformative,” said Patrick Presley of the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation. “This is an historic moment for the foundation as September will see an unparalleled focus on prostate cancer because of the Blue Ribbon campaign. We are particularly excited that many of the participating schools will have prostate cancer survivors as honorary captains for September home games. It is our hope that next year virtually all of the colleges and high schools in our state will be wearing the blue ribbon as a sign of support and awareness.”
