Prostate Cancer Fact:

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in American men. It is the second-greatest cause of cancer-related death for men, second only to lung cancer.

Risks and Benefits of Watchful Waiting

Watchful waiting avoids or delays the side effects of surgery and radiation, but this choice has risks. It may reduce the chance to control cancer before it spreads. Additionally, it may be harder to cope with surgery and radiation therapy as you age.

You may decide against watchful waiting if you do not want to live with an untreated cancer. If you choose watchful waiting but grow concerned later, you should discuss your feelings with your doctor.

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer and decide to be treated, you should talk with your doctor about possible side effects of treatment and how they can be minimized.
